HISTORY OFFICE UPDATE
I would like all of the Air Weather Association members to know
about the progress we are making on the Air Force Weather Heritage
Center. As mentioned last year,
the History Office has spent much time moving around and back and forth
while in the renovation process. Once our office renovation was pretty close to completion,
work began on the Heritage Center.
The Center, designed to house many of the available artifacts associated
with the Weather field, is now completed and ready to store more items.
Workers
have been busy taking down walls, adding a doorway, installing new ceiling
tiles, putting wood trim on the ceilings and walls, and the walls received
a nice vinyl wall covering.
In addition, we brought in beautiful display cabinets. As many
of you know, the display cases in the lobby of the old Headquarters Air
Weather Service building at Scott AFB, Illinois, were built-in, hence,
they could not be moved with us to Offutt AFB, Nebraska.
This new Heritage Center at AFWA Headquarters at Offutt AFB, will
become an integral part of our organization.
It will serve as a means to educate persons within and outside
of our organization. Each
person who passes through our facility will be able to see and read about
our heritage and be proud to have been a part of it!
The Center was dedicated on 24 May 2000 with Brig Gen Fred Lewis
(AF/XOW) officiating. Maj
Gen (Ret) John Collens was also present as was many of the past AFWA,
AWS and AFGWC commanders.
Anytime you are in the vicinity of Offutt Air Force Base, stop
by and check it out. We will
also have a research room for reviewing materials and are presently working
on a professional reading list [more news to come on that].
Hope to see you here at
Offutt AFB visiting the Heritage Center or at the AWA reunion in September!
Also, please keep sending in historical material.
It is appreciated immensely!
